American Apparel hires two new executives

Published
Mar 4, 2012

The Californian apparel brand has just announced the arrival of a new chief technology officer (CTO) and a new general merchandising manager (GMM). The two appointments follow the recent departure of its president Tom Casey, who left the company last December after just 12 months in charge.

Prior to joining American Apparel, Stacey Shulman, the new chief technology officer, was the vice president and chief information officer (CIO) at Island Pacific/Retail Pro, a retail focused technology company. The solutions architected by Ms. Shulman are currently in use in over 100,000 retail locations in more than 75 countries.

As for American Apparel’s new general merchandising manager, Jordan Schiff has joined the Californian brand after leaving Urban Outfitters, where he worked as a merchant and also reported to the CEO on strategic communications. Prior to Urban, Mr. Schiff was with Deloitte Consulting and Deloitte Financial Advisory Services. “Jordan possesses a strong balance of creative and analytic skill, and has a deep appreciation of our brand,” said American Apparel CEO Dov Charney. “We look forward to his leadership and the pivotal role he’ll play in our future development.”

American Apparel is still restoring its brand image after founder Dov Charney was accused of sexually assaulting employees. The company was also recently under investigation for hiring illegal workers and, after failing to publish its sales results on time, it was threatened to be delisted by the American Stock Exchange.

American Apparel currently operates 249 stores in around 20 countries. In fiscal year 2010, the company saw its sales drop 4.6% to 558.8 million dollars.
