Alexandra Shulman to leave British Vogue

Published

Alexandra Shulman is stepping down at Editor-in-Chief of British Vogue after a quarter of a century at the helm of Condé Nast’s flagship UK magazine.

Alexandra Shulman is leaving British Vogue - Conde Nast

The media giant’s outgoing publisher Nicholas Coleridge relayed the news on Wednesday saying it was “an announcement I hoped never to have to make.”

He said Shulman had informed him before Christmas that she intended to leave in six months’ time. No successor has yet been lined up.

"It is impossible to sufficiently express the contribution she has made to Vogue, to Condé Nast and to the British fashion industry,” he added.

Shulman has run the 101-year-old magazine for longer than anyone in its history and has been at the helm as it changed from just a monthly print edition into a print-to-digital title.

Shulman said of her decision: "During [my] time I have worked with an unparalleled collection of talent both inside and outside the magazine and have been lucky enough to see both Vogue and the British fashion industry expand and flourish.

"It has been very hard to find a rational reason to leave what is unquestionably a fascinating and rewarding role, but last autumn I realised that I very much wanted to experience a different life and look forward to a future separate to Vogue.”

Her decision last autumn also coincided with the airing of a TV documentary showing the behind-the-scenes working of the magazine and a number of events to celebrate its centenary year.

Before joining Vogue, Shulman worked for Tatler, The Sunday Telegraph and GQ and was seen as something of a fashion outsider when she first took over. But she has driven the title to a monthly readership of a million-plus.
