Amazon courts Latino Americans with Spanish version of US site

Amazon has launched a new, Spanish language version of its American site, targeted at the 41 million native Spanish speakers and 11.6 million bilingual Spanish speakers in the United States. The US is now the second-largest Spanish-speaking country in the world, after Mexico.

"Customers will be able to shop, browse and search for millions of products, view their shopping cart, and place orders in Spanish on Amazon.com and through the Amazon Mobile Shopping app," an Amazon spokeswoman said in a statement.  "We will continue to roll out the shopping experience over the coming weeks," the spokeswoman added. "More and more customers should expect to see the option to shop Amazon.com in Spanish soon."

While this is the first Spanish language version on Amazon targeting the US market, there are Spanish language pages for Amazon Mexico, and Amazon Spain.   Amazon is aggressively courting the Spanish-speaking market, recently launching its Prime subscripton service in Mexico, allowing shoppers to receive unlimited free shipping for about $46 a year.

Prime subscriptions may have reached its saturation point in the US, so Amazon has recently been expanding the service into other areas, including India, China, Japan, Canada, and several European countries.
