Amazon: heading for a Europe-wide strike?

Published
Jan 6, 2015

German trade union Verdi, at the source of several blockades in the German Amazon logistics centres, is looking to extend its actions into other countries. The aim is a coordinated strike with employees in France, UK, Czech Republic and Poland.

Meetings have apparently already been held between the representatives of the various European trade unions concerned, according to the German press. Although separated by their different work legislations and their collective agreements, the different organisations do have common ground when it comes to their fight for the improvement of working conditions in the logistics centres.

This desire to come together occurs after another strike in Germany at the beginning of December, at the end of a year that was already full of walk-outs. But is an extension of this phenomenon to other European Amazon centres currently conceivable?

With a strong presence in Europe, the American giant has nine logistics centres alone. But it's hard to imagine social movements in Poland, where the company only opened its first centres in September 2014. And in France, which has five logistics centres, the first strike orchestrated by the CGT (French General Confederation of Labour) on 22 December wasn't particularly successful.

With over 200 million customers, Amazon achieved 55.3 billion euros in sales in 2013, up 22% compared to 2012. Although the official results for 2014 have not yet been published, the portal is claiming a record number of two billion products sold in the fiscal year.
