American Apparel has partnered with logistics company Postmates to offer on demand shipping to consumers within 1 hour of their order.

In an effort to grow American Apparel’s mobile and online business, the consumer will receive their order of basics within an hour, instead of the traditional 5-7 business days of standard mail. 31 metro areas will be serviced by the partnership, incorporating 79 stores into the new model.

"American Apparel is improving its omni-channel consumer experience via Postmates by becoming their first major fashion retailer to offer 'on-demand basics'," said Thoryn Stephens, American Apparel's Chief Digital Officer.

The service will offer over 50 men’s and women’s basics styles to start.

Stephens continued, "You'll be able to receive hoodies, t-shirts, socks and more within a sixty minute delivery window — it's great for traveling or last-minute needs.  For the second phase we're integrating the experience with RFID for real-time inventory availability."

This is not Postmates and American Apparel’s first partnership. The companies tried this model out in NY and SF with positive results. Postmates estimates the system saves 10-15 minutes of labor per order, with long term operational savings.

"The combination of American Apparel's real-time, local inventory paired with Postmates' superior delivery technology and national footprint is changing the way customers can access their favorite brands," said Holger Luedorf, Postmates' Senior Vice President of Business. "One or two day shipping is no longer an option - we are creating entirely new customer expectations."
