Apple Pay to become more available for online retailers
Jun 14, 2016
Apple announced its new partnership with Shopify that will bring the ability for more than 275,000 merchants to offer Apply Pay to consumers on their websites.
The announcement was made at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference. Shopify, Inc. is the leading cloud-based, multichannel commerce platform designed for small and medium-sized businesses.
Global brands that rely on Shopify's platform include Tesla Motors, Red Bull, the NYSE, Budweiser and the LA Lakers.
With the expanded Apple Pay capacities, consumers will be able to quickly and securely check out via Safari on iPhone, iPad, and Mac with one touch.
“Currently, online shoppers encounter a lot of friction when trying to purchase items on a mobile device. Apple Pay can help provide consumers with seamless purchase experiences," said Jason Normore, Director of Engineering at Shopify.
Apple Pay is a convenient way to pay with just the touch of a finger on a mobile device. Apple Pay creates a device account number with an encrypted security code for every transaction, eliminating the security risk of storing a credit card on Apple servers.
Apple Pay uses the Touch ID feature to convert sales quickly, literally going from clicking "buy" to completing the transaction. There is no need to enter shipping or billing information once logged in, since that information is stored with Apple Pay.
The system needed attention though. Shopify found that while more than 60% of checkouts come from mobile devices, only 40% of the visitors actually complete a purchase.
Shopify's network includes 275,000 businesses globally, which will now be Apple Pay merchants.
