Band of Outsiders folding?

Published
May 27, 2015

According to Fashionista.com, Los Angeles-based menswear brand Band of Outsiders is folding. People within and close to the company have reported that it has laid off the majority of its staff and canceled its fall wholesale orders, citing low funds as the reason.

Band of Outsiders

Scott Sternberg founded Band of Outsiders in 2004 as a men’s shirt and tie line inspired by his youth. In 2007, Sternberg launched a menswear-inspired contemporary women’s line named Boy. by Band of Outsiders and was nominated for the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund a year later. In 2009, the brand won the CFDA Swarovski Award for New Menswear Designer of the Year, and a year later won the CFDA Menswear Designer of the Year in a tie.

In 2010, Sternberg planned to take the company—which was earning $12 million in sales at the time—to the next level by offering . In 2013, the company opened a store in Tokyo, and last fall it opened a store in New York City’s SoHo.

But despite all this, there have been hints that business hasn't been going so well. Sternberg announced that he wouldn’t be showing a collection for New York Fashion Week during the Fall 2014 season, stating that he was focusing his attention on other areas of the brand. He also canceled his Spring 2015 show this past February. And the most recent news from the company, dating from early April, is that former creative director Joseph Pickman jumped ship to American Apparel.

The Band of Outsiders' press team has yet to confirm the news.
