NEW YORK, Nov 20 (Reuters) - U.S. handbag and leather goods maker Coach Inc (COH.N) said on Friday 20 November it plans to increase growth projections for its China business, due to faster-than-expected growth.

In May 2008, the company said it planned to open 50 stores in China over the next five years, at a rate of 10 per year. It also targeted a 10 percent market share of what it then expected would be a $2.5 billion market by the end of fiscal 2013, or Coach sales of about $250 million.

"Given the stronger market growth than originally expected, our performance and our accelerated pace of store openings, we will be revising our projections substantially upward next spring," said Coach CEO Lew Frankfort during a presentation at a conference hosted by Morgan Stanley.

The presentation was simultaneously broadcast over the Internet.

Coach shares were down 37 cents, or 1 percent, at $33.56 on the New York Stock Exchange. (Reporting by Martinne Geller, editing by Matthew Lewis)
