The New School announced Thursday the honorary degree recipients who will speak at the 80th commencement exercises on Friday, May 20, at the Jacob Javitz Convention Center.
This year’s recipients include Diane von Furstenberg; actress Laverne Cox; Black Lives Matter activist DeRay Mckesson; Feminist Frequency creator Anita Sarkeesian; International Rescue Committee President and CEO David Miliband; and forensic anthropologist Mercedes Doretti. Each speaker will deliver a brief five-minute talk for The New School’s graduating class.
Diane Von Furstenberg has been involved with The New School on numerous occasions. The fashion designer gifted The New School $250,000 to fund a new scholarship in the fashion school at Parsons in 2008 at an event that raised $2 million for the school, and in 2014, she held a public discussion at the school’s Tishman Auditorium with Parsons Research Chair and Professor, Hazel Clark about the wrap dress on its 40th anniversary.
“I am thrilled to welcome our honorary degree recipients, all of whom have worked tirelessly to confront pressing issues such as racial and gender inequity, LGBT rights, and crimes against humanity,” said President David E. Van Zandt. “I encourage our graduating students to follow the lead of our honorary degree recipients by thinking creatively and critically to challenge the status quo.”
The New School’s Class of 2016 is made up of 3,216 associate, bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral students in art and design, the social sciences, the humanities, management and the performing arts. This is the first graduating class of several new academic programs, including the BA in Anthropology, MS in Data Visualization, and BS in Media Studies.
The New School’s 80th commencement exercises will be on Friday, May 20 at 11am at the Jacob Javitz Convention Center, 655 West 34th Street, New York City.
