GDS cancels China show after Micam announces partnership with Shanghai Fashion Week

Published
Jan 29, 2013

The European-trade-show-in-China showdown that we might have expected to see this coming April has been called off as the German footwear show, GDS, has cancelled its spring edition in Shanghai.

Shanghai wants to reinforce its position of fashion capital in China

It seems the show had difficulty finding local partners. Ironically, Micam - an Italian footwear tradeshow and a major competitor – announced that it had signed an agreement with Shanghai Fashion Week, whereby Micam is the official footwear partner of the fashion event.

Given the news that the German’s will not be coming, the Italian show organizers now have the all-clear to launch the European footwear concept in China. The event will take place between 9 and11 April at the Shanghai Exhibition centre. Micam’s recent ‘Le Micam’ project, collaboration between ANCI (National Association of Italian Shoe Manufacturers) and Fiera Milana, trade event organizer, undoubtedly helped push the position of the show in the eyes of the Chinese. GDS Select, the German footwear offering, was looking to showcase some 70 brands that perhaps would not have gained sufficient visibility at an Italian-orientated show.

Where Micam has chosen to stick with Shanghai for its Chinese projects, GDS was looking to alternate its shows between Shanghai and Beijing.
