A new report has revealed just how much of an impact mobile browsing is having on the Irish e-commerce sector, with average online orders on mobile phones increasing by 11% in January.

This is according to Retail Excellence’s January eCommerce Dashboard report, compiled in conjunction with StudioForty9, to reveal online sales trends and associated patterns in Ireland.

The result builds on an increased number of Irish consumers using their mobile phones to browse for products, up 46% compared to the same period in 2017. Furthermore, mobile conversion rates where a consumer goes from browsing to buying increased by 6%.

E-commerce Manager at Retail Excellence David Campbell said: “The data produced by our Dashboard Report gives an excellent insight into the current state of play within the Irish online marketplace and is one of our key supports offered to Irish retailers trading online.

“It is clear from our research that Irish consumers buying habits are evolving and it is important for retailers to recognize this.”

The January report reveals that the majority of Irish consumers do their research online before purchasing, which means the government should do more support retailers in the digital space, added Campbell.

“With over €600 billion expected to be spent by European consumers online in 2018 and the changes forthcoming from Europe relating to Geo-Blocking and eRegulations it is clear that retail is now boundary-less and there is a huge global opportunity for Irish retailers to capitalise on,” he concluded.

A separate report revealed last week that more than half of Irish online spending goes to online retailers abroad, with consumers spending a total of €3 billion with international e-tailers.

The report from the Marketing Institute of Ireland said Irish companies need to invest more in their websites and e-commerce platforms to improve these numbers.
