Iris van Herpen: 'Transforming Fashion' opens at Dallas Museum of Art

Published
May 30, 2017

The Dallas Museum of Art opened this month Iris Van Herpen: Transforming Fashion, the Dutch fashion designer’s seventh solo exhibition in five years, and the designer’s seventy-first exhibit in ten years.

Iris van Herpen, Refinery Smoke, Dress, July 2008, untreated woven metal gauze, cow leather, cotton, Groninger Museum - Bart Oomes, No 6 Studios

Curated by Sarah Schleuning of High Museum of Art in Atlanta and Mark Wilson and Sue-an van der Zijpp of Groninger Museum in the Netherlands, Transforming Fashion explores the evolution of Iris Van Herpen’s couture that were produced with innovative manufacturing technologies such as 3D printing, and were crafted with unique fabrics and unexpected materials, including umbrella tins and magnets.

The exhibition, which is co-organized by the High Museum of Art and the Groninger Museum, showcases 45 ensembles that span 15 collections from 2008 to 2015.

Select ensembles on view include laser cut cow leather shoes and a 3D printed polyamide dress that was named one of the 50 Best Inventions of 2011 by Time Magazine. The Dutch designer’s work has also garnered the attention of many celebrities over the years, including Beyoncé, Björk, Lady Gaga, Tilda Swinton, Scarlett Johannson, and Grimes, and has led to collaborations with choreographer Benjamin Millepied and the Sasha Waltz dance company in Berlin.

Iris Van Herpen: Transforming Fashion will be on view in the Hoffman Galleries through August 20, 2017.
