Mixed reviews on Rodarte “Woodshock” film from Venice Film Fest debut

“Woodshock,” the first film to be directed by Rodarte’s Kate and Laura Mulleavy, will be released September 22. The impressionistic psychological horror story stars Kirsten Dunst, who also exec produced, as an alienated woman haunted by loss and drugs, and Pilou Asbaek as her romantic interest. After its Venice Film Festival debut last week, the early reviews are starting to pour in. And it’s clear "Woodshock" draws extreme reactions from critics: both good and bad.

Rottentomatoes.com calls it “immersive, spellbinding, and sublime; ‘Woodshock’ transcends genre to become a singularly thrilling cinematic experience that marks the arrival of the Mulleavy siblings as a major new voice in film.”

Variety’s review is more mixed: comparing the director sisters to fashion designer-turned-film director Tom Ford, “Kate and Laura Mulleavy don’t come to the medium quite as fully formed. the film is as extravagantly embellished as one of their most gawp-worthy gowns. Yet this sparse meditation could desperately use some extra detailing at the level of character and psychology.”

Metacritic calls it “a hypnotic exploration of isolation, paranoia, and grief that exists in a dream-world all its own.”

Screendaily’s comments: “’Woodshock simply seems reluctant to commit itself to mere coherence, as if that simply were too unchic.”

And The Playlist says “’Woodshock’ is aflutter with floaty florals and sheer chiffon; it’s an aesthetic that carries through to their gauzy, terminally insubstantial film directing debut.”

The Mulleavy's first foray into film was as costumer designers on "Black Swan." They also created the costumes for "Woodshock."
