The square, baptized Place Iona-Monahan, is located in the city’s historic garment district in the borough of Ahuntsic-Cartierville, at the corner of Chabanel St. and Esplanade Ave. The square is also part green space and features a water fountain and a long white concrete table.

Monahan was born in 1923 and started a career in the fashion industry in the 1940s. She began her career at Eaton’s department store and later started chronicling the industry. She worked as a journalist for the Montreal Star for a decade until she joined the staff of the Montreal Gazette in 1978. She passed away in 2006 at the age of 82.

The initiative is a part of an effort by municipal officials to name more Montreal locations including streets, parks and public spaces after prominent women.
