NYFW shortens schedule, confirms Calvin Klein, Tom Ford for first day

New York Fashion Week is going to be a bit shorter in September. The CFDA on Tuesday announced that NYFW will end on Wednesday, September 13, as opposed to its usual Thursday closing. According to the organization, the changes are a result of discussions it had with the industry to improve the NYFW experience.

The shorter schedule could make for a stronger showing during the week. Marc Beckham, Vice President of Marketing for the CFDA, said in an interview, "It’s important to have strong opening and closing shows. But it’s just as important to have strong designers showing every day.”

The changes to the NYFW schedule also follow the departures of a number of prominent brands from the schedule, including Tommy Hilfiger, Rebecca Minkoff, Proenza Schouler and Rodarte. While Hilfiger and Minkoff are sticking to the ‘see-now-buy-now’ format and opting to show in other cities (both designers held shows in Los Angeles in February), Proenza Schouler and Rodarte will show in Paris beginning with the Spring/Summer 2018 collection.

The CFDA also confirmed on Tuesday that Calvin Klein and recent addition Tom Ford will kick off NYFW on Thursday, September 7, showing at 10am and 7pm, respectively, and Marc Jacobs will close the week on Wednesday, September 13 at 6pm.

The Calvin Klein show presentation is the second fashion show for the label under Raf Simons, and the Tom Ford show will be the designer’s first show back on the schedule. Ford in September tested and ditched the ‘see-now-buy-now’ show format, which he said he pioneered.

The CFDA is currently finalizing the shifts for New York Fashion Week.
