Nike releases Nike Mag sneaker with Michael J. Fox Foundation

Published
Oct 4, 2016

The Nike Mag sneaker from Back to the Future II has finally received a release date. On Tuesday, Nike announced the limited-edition global release of the sneaker in partnership with the Michael J. Fox Foundation to help speed a cure for Parkinson’s disease and raise awareness.

The Nike Mag Shoe from Back to the Future II. The sneaker will be released globally through an online draw

The sportswear company first debuted the Nike Mag silhouette in 2011 and delivered a pair to Back to the Future actor Michael J. Fox on October 21, 2015 for Back to the Future Day (October 21, 2015 was the day Fox’s character Marty McFly traveled to in Back to the Future II). Almost one year later, Nike will release 89 pairs globally through an online draw.

The draw begins on October 4 on the Nike website and Nike+ app and it will run through October 11, 2016. Tickets are $10 donations to the Michael J. Fox Foundation, and there is no limit to the number of tickets an individual can purchase. The winners of the draw will be notified on October 17, 2016. In addition, one pair of the Nike Mag will be auctioned live in Hong Kong on October 11, in London on October 14 and 17 and in New York City on November 12 at the Michael J. Fox Foundation benefit gala, “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Cure Parkinson’s.”

“Though it initially shared only a few seconds of screen time with Michael, the idea behind the Nike Mag unlocked something much bigger at Nike,” says Mark Parker, Chairman, President and CEO, NIKE, Inc. “It sent us down an uncharted path of innovation, but it also opened our eyes to our ability to fight some of the world’s biggest challenges. We feel privileged for the opportunity to raise even more awareness for the fight against Parkinson’s.”

The Nike Mag sneaker features an Adaptive Fit, an individually responsive system that senses the wearer and tightens or loosens accordingly. Adaptive Fit is a result of the sportswear company’s HyperAdapt 1.0 that automatically laces and fits to the unique shape of each athlete’s foot.

100% of the proceeds from the online draw will go to The Michael J. Fox Foundation.
