Nordstrom will be shutting the doors of its MainPlace Mall anchor store in Santa Ana, California, showing another crucial hit on the dwindling life of North American malls.

"Southern California is one of our strongest markets and we're continuing to invest in our growth there... We've enjoyed taking care of customers at MainPlace for 29 years, but believe our other nearby locations will better serve them longer term," said Jamie Nordstrom, president of stores for Nordstrom, in a statement regarding the closure,

Nordstrom has been the anchor store in the MainPlace mall for over 20 years now, first opening in 1978. Now that Nordstrom is pulling out, the mall, which is currently home to Coach, Victoria’s Secret, Forever 21, Sephora, and JC Penney, is left with a gaping hole in its anchor location. Although the mall also is home to another anchor store, Macy’s, Nordstrom took up 169,000-square-feet of the mall. 195 employees have been affected by the closure.

Malls across the United States have been suffering immensely over the past year. Of the next retailers predicted by Fitch Ratings to declare bankruptcy, almost all were mall-based brands, including J.Crew, Nine West, and Sears. The dismal outlook for malls is largely due to customers increasingly looking to online retailers for apparel, beauty, and tech purchases.
