Proenza Schouler gets political with new video supporting Planned Parenthood

Proenza Schouler released its third collaboration with artist Harley Weir, this time a video asking its fans to support Planned Parenthood.

 
The New York-based design label teamed up with Weir as well actresses, musicians and models such as Amber Valletta, Grimes, Hari Nef, Hanne Gaby Odiele and Jemima Kirke to create the short film. Titled “A Film for Planned Parenthood of New York City,” the video shows the women speaking about femininity and the confines of gender. Various monologues and voice-overs are interspersed throughout the film, each touching on different topic. Nef relates her experience as a trans woman, while Valletta recounts the story of Adam and Eve.
 
The film ends with an invitation to visit Planned Parenthood’s website to learn how to support the organization. “At a time when Planned Parenthood is under attack, there are many things you can do to support them and the communities they serve,” the video reads.

Proenza Schouler’s founders Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez say the Women’s March earlier this year inspired them in both the making of the film and in designing the label’s Fall/Winter 2017 collection.
 
The brand’s previous video collaborations with Weir were titled, “Legs Are Not Doors” and “PS I Love You (Ithigi Lithigove Yithigou),” and also discussed femininity and sexuality.
 
Proenza Schouler also made a subtle nod to issues of gender identity and exclusivity in the casting of its pre-fall lookbook earlier this year. The lookbook featured trans and gender-fluid models such as Stav Strashko and Torraine Futurum, something the duo said was important in reflecting the culture of New York City.
