Published
Sep 14, 2015

Between January and May 2015, Spain shipped nearly 72 million pairs of shoes and reached a revenue of €1.2 billion. The average price of the product was €17.65 per pair of shoes, which is significantly lower than the average export price of its competitors, Italy (€44.7) and Portugal (€31.9).

Shoe exports to European countries led the growth, as shippings to France and Italy –Spain’s largest footwear buyers - grew by almost 20%. Portugal, on the other hand, showed negative results, falling 2.6% in pairs, and 22.9% in revenue.

Outside Europe, the United States has become the largest buyer of Spanish shoes, and recorded a 15% growth in the first five months of the year. Purchases of shoes climbed 25.4% and the average price of shoes produced in Spain stood around €40.3 per pair, one of the highest export prices of the Spanish footwear industry.

Shippings to Japan fell 3.1% and sales were down 11.5%. The average price also decreased 8.6% to €16.8 euros. Meanwhile, China bought 433,298 pairs of shoes, down 8% from last year and totalling €16.6 million (-2.8%). The average price of the product rose 5.8% and reached €38.3 per pair of shoes.

Spain produces mainly leather shoes, which were up 34.5% in pairs and 60.3% in value with an average price of €30.8 euros. International sales of women’s footwear exports increased 21%, up 12.5% in volume from 2014. Men’s and children’s shoes recorded drops in the last five months. Children’s footwear was down 12.5% in volume and 5.1% in revenue, while men’s footwear exports reached a 2.4% decline and 1.9% fall in revenue.

International purchases of canvas footwear rose 16%, 21% in value, while the export price of shoes with wooden soles was up 53.2%, recording a 67.7% rise in revenue.
