Swarovski and CSM name winner of 2016 BA Jewellery Design Project

Crystal expert Swarovski teamed up with Central St Martins for the 15th consecutive year on the 2016 BA Jewellery Design Project, which supports emerging talent.

Lucie Davis' winning designs - Swarovski

The brief for the third-year BA Jewellery Design students this year was to use Swarovski crystals and gemstones in an innovative way to create couture pieces inspired by water. Ten students out of 38 were shortlisted and given crystals by Swarovski to create their designs.

The overall winner was Lucie Davis, whose rings made of 100% compressed cellulose sponge featuring Swarovski crystals were titled: ‘For twice the shine - Just add water’.

Davis commented: "I feel extremely grateful and honoured to have won. It's been a great experience working on the project and working to the theme of water and sustainability. The Swarovski crystal is integrated into a sponge material that adds an element of preciousness to the ordinary. I wanted to explore the transformative quality of water but also bring an interactive quality to my piece. I think it highlights and draws awareness to the necessity of water.”

The project was judged by a panel that included Central Saint Martins’ Caroline Broadhead and Lin Cheung. Broadhead, Programme Leader and Course Leader, BA Jewellery Design, CSM, commented: “BA Jewellery Design have been working with Swarovski for more than 15 years, each year the students generate unique ideas and new ways of using Swarovski Crystals and Gemstones. Both CSM and Swarovski encourage a creative approach and welcome innovative thinking so this is a very productive collaboration.”
