Target to open first Midtown Manhattan store at Herald Square

Target is moving to Midtown Manhattan. The retailer announced on Monday that it will open its third Manhattan retail location at Herald Square in October 2017.

The 43,000-square-foot, two-level store will offer apparel and accessories, an open market grocery department, health, personal care and beauty products, and a CVS Pharmacy, and it will feature Target’s Order Pickup service that allows customers to buy products online and pickup in store. The new 34th Street store is one of 30 stores Target plans to open this year.

Target is currently focused on expanding its small format stores in dense urban neighborhoods. The store format is better tailored for its local guests compared to Target’s large-scale locations.

“The addition of the Herald Square store location is exciting for Target as we expand our footprint with small-format stores in Manhattan,” said Mark Schindele, Senior Vice President, Properties. “Not only will we be able to serve the thousands of working professionals that travel through Herald Square each day, but we’ll have the opportunity to showcase Target’s exclusive brands and compelling offers for the many tourists from around the world who shop in this vibrant neighborhood in Manhattan.”

The Minnesota-based company announced it would open a 27,000-square-foot store at New York City’s East Village neighborhood in 2018. The location is one of 10 locations the company announced would open in 2017, including four stores in California, four in Pennsylvania and two in Chicago.

In addition, Target plans to open a retail location in Hell’s Kitchen in New York City in 2019. The retailer currently operates two stores in Manhattan in Harlem and Tribeca.
