The Met extends the Manus x Machina final weekend hours

Published
Aug 27, 2016

The Metropolitan Museum of Art extended its Manus x Machina: Fashion in the Age of Technology exhibit once again. The Costume Institute’s popular spring 2016 exhibition will have extended hours on its final weekend. On Friday, September 2 and Saturday, September 3, the exhibit will remain open to the public until midnight instead of its normal closing time of 9pm.

Manus x Machina first opened on May 5 and was extended by three weeks from August 14 to September 5. To date, the exhibit has drawn over than 664,328 visitors, more than the spring 2011 exhibit Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty, which is the Costume Institute’s second most attended show. The Costume Institute’s most attended show is China: Through the Looking Glass, which drew 815,992 visitors. Andrew Bolton, the Curator in Charge of The Costume Institute, curated all three exhibits.

During the extended hours, the Met will open its Balcony Bar with appetizers, full bar service and music by the ETHEL and Friends string quartet. In addition, the Manus x Machina galleries will be the only galleries in the museum open to the public during the extended hours.

The spring 2016 exhibit explores technology’s impact on fashion design and manufacturing as well as fashion’s evolution from handmade goods to machine-made goods and mass production. Manus x Machina has over 30 ensembles on display from a number of designers and fashion houses including Chanel, Dior, Saint Laurent, Givenchy, Alexander McQueen, Balenciaga, Hussein Chayalan and Iris Van Herpen among others.
