Toronto clothing brand under fire for “homeless” taglines
Feb 26, 2017
A Toronto clothing brand is receiving heat on social media for their clothing line that uses taglines such as “homeless” and “change please”.
The brand baptized Homeless Toronto is being accused of exploiting homelessness and poverty. Homeless Toronto launched just a few weeks ago and sells products such as T shirts, hoodies and sweatpants.
On their website the company describes its mission: “We're here to give back to the lost underdogs, the ones who have been tossed aside & forgotten, giving back to the people in our beautiful city. Hitting the streets providing quality clothing and goods for everyone in need. Being Homeless is how we are going to make change.”
The brand’s owner Trevor Nicholls is denying the allegations and is standing by his brand, according to the local press. He says his brand is meant to raise awareness and stop stigmatization of the homeless.
Still, many are questioning the brand’s motives and tactics to raise awarness.
As of Sunday, the website was still running and items are still for sale.
