Tory Burch removes ad after online criticism

Published
Mar 29, 2017

After trying to capitalize on a zeitgeist internet trend, Tory Burch has been forced to remove her Spring/Summer 2017 advertising campaign after a flurry of online criticism.

A still of the since-removed Burch campaign - Tory Burch

Titled 'Tory Story: An American Road Trip', Burch's Spring/Summer 2017 campaign featured Poppy Delevingne and two other models, dancing to Zay Hilfigerrr and Zayion McCall’s hit song "Juju On That Beat". Juju On That Beat sparked a hit dance crazy in 2016 that quickly spread across the internet.

The main point of contention for the video: the song was written by black artists, while Burch’s ad only featured white models.

Burch quickly released a statement after the video began to receive criticism, stating, “The video was intended to celebrate music that we love with our spring collection. It was never meant to be insensitive in any way. We have removed the video from our channels. I personally feel very badly if this hurt anyone, and I am truly sorry.”

The brand has removed the video from all its platforms and has requested that the video is removed from all other social media and websites.

The film was directed by illustrious fashion editor Giovanna Battaglia Englebert. Englebert has also since removed the video from her social media platforms.
