Turkey’s official gazette announced last Wednesday that the government has doubled custom duties on imports from the USA of several product categories, among them cars, alcohol and tobacco products.
The decree signed by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan raised custom duties to 120% on passenger vehicles, to 140% on alcoholic drinks and to 60% on tobacco leaves.
Further rises are expected on other products, such as cosmetics, rice and coal.
On Twitter, Turkey’s Vice-President Fuat Oktay justified these measures by invoking “the principle of reciprocity, in response to the deliberate attacks by the US government against Turkey’s economy.”
Washington imposed financial sanctions against Turkey’s ministers of Justice and the Interior owing to their involvement in the affair that led to the arrest and imprisonment of pastor Andrew Brunson.
Two weeks ago, Donald Trump also announced that custom duties on US imports of Turkish steel and aluminium will double, stating that relationships with Ankara “aren’t currently good.”
