US tops worldwide consumer interest in smartwatches

Consumer interest in smartwatches is on the rise, with the US, China and the UK leading the way, according to Digital Luxury Group's just-released World Watch Report Smartwatch Feature.

Consumer interest in smartwatches has picked up following the Apple Watch announcement, according to the Digital Luxury GroupAFP / Peter PARKS

The US, China and the UK are, in that order, the countries that search the most for smartwatches, finds the report, which also tracked 62 brands and found that TAG Heuer was the brand that got the most searches related to the term "smartwatch." Rolex and Montblanc came in second and third.

The report also found that smartwatch options from traditional luxury watchmakers generally came in at around $5,000 -- while the Apple Watch Edition, at $14,000, is nearly three times that.

However, says David Sadigh, Founder & CEO at Digital Luxury Group, "We anticipate Apple to generate 80% of their sales with Apple Watches priced less than $700."
