Fast Retailing's Uniqlo is not shying away from brick and mortar retail with the announcement of next week's opening of a third D.C. Metro area Uniqlo store.

The new Washington D.C. store is located in the Union Square train station and joins global retailers H&M, Khiel's, MAC Cosmetics and Swarovski among others. Unlike some of Uniqlo's larger footprints, the new D.C. store is just over 3,000 square feet.

In September, Uniqlo opened a pop-up shop on F Street in an old American Apparel store near the new Union Square store. That pop-up was slated to be open for six months and to be used to test the market for additional Uniqlo expansion. The news of the new Union Square store indicates the D.C. market was receptive to the brand.

Uniqlo's first presence in D.C. was a 10,000 square foot store at Tyson's Corner in Northern Virginia. Uniqlo's USA CEO Hiroshi Taki said at the time, "“We opened our first U.S. store in New York City nearly 10 years ago, and we look forward to expanding our brand along the East Coast."

With the new D.C. store, Uniqlo is edging closer to having 50 retail locations in the U.S. Last week it opened its new denim lab in Downtown Los Angeles, having opened a denim innovation center, also in Los Angeles, last year. It plans to have 200 U.S. locations by 2020.

The new Washington D.C. Uniqlo is scheduled to open on Tuesday, October 10.
