Walmart will hand out over $157 million in shares to 850,000 Walmart employees in North America. These cash bonuses are based on store performances in Q4 of 2016.
Out of these 850,000 employees, 22,000 employees in Alabama will receive $4 million in shares. John Tow, Walmart’s Regional General Manager for Alabama told the press, “We’re proud to reward the more than 22,000 associates across the state who earned bonuses last quarter for their hard work and dedication. Our associates are the heartbeat of our company and as leaders, we are continuously working to help provide them with a good start, a clear path, and unlimited opportunities. We know we are better equipped to serve our customers when our associates grow professionally, feel supported and share in the company’s success.”
Walmart hands out bonuses on a quarterly basis, paying out over $201 million in Q2 of last year. According to Reuters, the average employee bonus is $220.
Over the past two years, Walmart has been putting a focus on customer service by moving more employees to the front of the store. In an effort to keep employees happier, Walmart has increased its entry-level wages to $10/hour and has spent $2.7 billion in employee compensation over those two years.
Walmart offers a lot of in-house opportunities – over 75% of management teams were once hourly workers. Walmart also currently boasts 40 employee training academies.
