BFC reveals details of 2016/17 education programme

The British Fashion Council has announced a new apprenticeship programme, a free educational scheme for young people aged 14-16 and a new scholarship to support exceptional talent.

The plans come shortly after the announcement that this year’s Fashion Awards will raise funds for the BFC’s Education Foundation.

“The BFC is dedicated to securing future talent and establishing pathways through education and into employment,” said Caroline Rush, CBE, Chief Executive of the BFC. “This includes working with global fashion players and businesses to support scholarships and competitions to support the most talented design students.”

A group of fashion businesses will be supported by the BFC to develop a fashion apprenticeship that will provide recipients with skills ranging from design to business. The University of the Arts London will be the awarding body and the scheme will include a six month foundation core and a twelve month programme focused on either production development, sales and logistics or fashion marketing and communication.

An Employer Group has been created to establish best practice. Zoe Olive, Chair of the Fashion Apprenticeship Employer Group said, “As employers we feel this is a unique and unparalleled way into the industry which will provide learners with a broad understanding of the industry as it stands today and to equip them for work in a variety of fields. This course provides a sound knowledge and experience base from which to jump straight into employment or further education.”

Meanwhile, young people interested in the fashion industry will be able to study fashion at their local college or university for free as part of the BFC’s new National Fashion & Business Saturday Club. Launched in partnership with the Sorrell Foundation, the Club will also offer exhibition visits, talks, masterclasses and a showcase space at Somerset House in London.

Also new for the 2016/2017 programme is the addition of an Exceptional Talent Scholarship to support promising BA students who are experiencing financial difficulty. Past MA scholarship winners include Andres Azubel, Senior Designer, Givenchy (2005) who said, “The relief on the economic side meant I could focus on learning and on my career.”

The BFC’s Education Foundation is supported by Charlotte Olympia, Coach, Eiesha Bharti Pasricha Marks & Spencer, Mulberry and Dame Natalie Massenet, as well as HM Government.
