"Made in NY" factory opens in Brooklyn

Published
Feb 16, 2017

The city of New York is looking to revive the city's garment industry, and had announced plans to open a $136 million “Made in NY” campus. Mayor Bill de Blasio hopes the Brooklyn campus will become the center of the garment manufacturing, film, and television production industries in New York City.

“We have used our ‘Made in NY’ brand to grow fashion and film companies,” said Alicia Glen, Deputy Mayor for New York's Housing and Economic Development Office. “Today, we're committing some of our most important real estate assets to support them as well. These industries support hundreds of thousands of families with good wages, and they need affordable and modern space to grow. The ‘Made in NY’ Campus represents the collision of our creative economy and advanced manufacturing. This is going to be a 21st-century working waterfront that keeps our city the capital of film and fashion."

The “Made in NY” campus will take over 200,000-square-feet at Bush Terminal in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. 100,000 square feet of that space will be dedicated to film and television production. The remainder of the space will provide small studio spaces for local manufacturing brands to rent out for their production process.

The opening of the campus, anticipated for 2020, will see over 1,500 new jobs created in the garment, film, and television industries. This push is part of a grand plan by the city to create 40,000 jobs over the next four years.

In addition to the sprawling campus, the city of New York’s Economic Development Corporation has launched a new marketing campaign to support its “Made in NY” project. Alejandra Alonso Rojas, Cadet, Dannijo, and Maiyet were the four designers highlighted in the print, social media, digital, and video components of the campaign. In addition to this announcement, de Blasio has tripled the city’s investment in the fashion industry – increasing from $5 million in 2016 to $15 million.
