44.4% of UK online transactions made on mobile devices in Q1

British people are among the ones who use mobile devices for online shopping the most, a new survey has found. While 27.2% of global online transactions in 2015's first quarter were made on mobile devices, in the UK the figure stands at 44.4%.

The 27.2% is up on 25.8% in Q4 and a huge 39% increase year-on-year. For the first time since payment technology company Adyen started publishing the figures in June 2013, the average transaction value (ATV) of digital goods purchased via tablets has surpassed the figure for desktops/laptops.

In the US, mobile payments rose nearly 5% over the past six months to 26.7%. In Europe they increased by just 2% in the same period, to 28.6%. And for the first time, Asian markets broke the 20% barrier for mobile payments.

By March 2015, smartphones were accounting for 16% of global online transactions, compared to 11.5% for tablets.

“Tablets may well be approaching market saturation but thanks to retailers and businesses focusing on optimizing the payment process for the channel, they are attracting increasing spend as consumers become more comfortable using these devices to pay for things online,” said Roelant Prins, Chief Commercial Officer, Adyen. “There has been a seismic shift in how and where people are comfortable spending money. All mobile channels in the past 12 months have experienced impressive uplift.”
