Afterpay expands in-store payment option across U.S.
'Buy now, pay later' payment company Afterpay has expanded its in-store platform to the United States.
The payment method, which allows customers to pay for their items in four installments without incurring interest or fees, will now be available to U.S. customers nationwide in stores like Forever 21, Finish Line, JD Sports, Levi's, Skechers, Fresh, APL, Solstice Sunglasses and select DSW stores.
First launched online, Afterpay introduced its in-store payment solution in 2016 in Australia and New Zealand. In order to use the method, customers must set up a virtual Afterpay card stored in their digital wallet. When shopping in eligible stores, customers can then tap the card icon in the Afterpay app, which activates the Afterpay card in the wallet, and then use the digital card to make purchases with Apple Pay or Google Pay.
"Just in time for the holiday shopping season, we are thrilled to roll out our in-store capabilities to all customers in the U.S. - making paying in-store more convenient, secure and contactless," said Nick Molnar, Afterpay's co-founder and chief executive officer of North America.
"Afterpay customers can now choose either physical or online shopping to buy holiday gifts - which brings new customers and drives more sales conversion to retailers without any additional set-up or integration costs."
Previously, Afterpay tried out its in-store payment method with U.S. consumers in partnership with Revolve at the brand's 2018 New York City pop-up shop.
