Alex and Ani use copper from the Statue of Liberty in new collection

Alex and Ani have launched a new collection called Liberty Copper that uses copper originally stemming from the Statue of Liberty National Monument.

The highlight piece of Alex and Ani's 26 piece collection includes an exact replica of the Statue of Liberty's copper torch made from her preserved copper.

The Statue of Liberty underwent renovation from 1984−1986. At that time, stainless steel armature bars replaced her original iron frame and copper supports. The copper was preserved due to its historical nature.

"We always knew there was a greater purpose for these preserved materials," said Stephen A. Briganti, President and CEO of The Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation.

Briganti explained, "This collaboration with Alex and Ani will bring the Statue's message and spirit directly into the lives of people around the world. We couldn't be more pleased."

The message is one of carrying light in the spirit of the Statue's torch. Each Liberty Copper Collection piece contains a meaning card that reads, "Bearing her torch…we become Lady Liberty's movement of light and hope. When we [carry light], we ignite the light in others, and create one light indivisible."

The Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation works with the National Park Service and US Department of the Interior to maintain the Ellis Island National Museum of Immigration as well as the other historical projects for Ellis Island. The new collection launches the same year as the National Park Service's 100th Anniversary, adding a unique take to other brands partnering up and celebrating the anniversary.

"The biggest honor of my life is to take her message and make it literally, physically attached to each and every one of us," says Alex and Ani Founder, CEO, and Chief Creative Officer Carolyn Rafaelian. "Liberty enlightening the world. That's who she is. She holds the torch to light our path."

Alex and Ani's charity collaborations have amassed donations of $35 million dollars. With the Liberty Copper Collection, Alex and Ani will be helping The Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation which is the primary nonprofit charged with raising funds and restoring the Statue.
