Alexander Wang to skip pre-fall season

American designer Alexander Wang is skipping the pre-fall season, Vogue reports.

The move marks Wang’s latest disruptive move within the fashion world, following the designer’s decision to drop out of New York Fashion Week in January 2018. Now, the designer is forgoing pre-fall in order to hold a grand celebration for the brand’s 15th anniversary in 2020.

“It was really thinking about: How can we dedicate and really focus our resources where we felt it was necessary?” Wang told Vogue.

“For us that was the 15th anniversary. A show in December felt like it maybe wasn’t the best place to put our focus. I don’t want to say that this is a decision that means we won’t return to a fashion show again or that we don’t believe in the format, but it just felt like the right moment for us to do something different.”

No stranger to deviating from industry rules, Wang was one of the first designers to move to the pre-season schedule in 2017, allowing his brand to show clothes while wholesale buying budgets were high.

True to form, the designer now intends to deliver even more undisclosed surprises, with plans to stage a major consumer-facing “moment” for the second quarter of the year and broaden the brand’s ethos beyond its products, Vogue reports.

“There are other exciting projects coming up that I can’t necessarily announce right now…but they will definitely push the limits in terms of how we can be able to build lifestyle,” Wang said, without elaborating further.

Expectations are set to be high for the mystery 2020 celebration, coming after Wang’s previous and legendary blow-out bashes, including the designer’s ‘#Wangfest’ celebration held for Spring 2018.
