Alexander McQueen and Balenciaga confirm fur-free move

Published
Mar 30, 2021

Alexander McQueen and Balenciaga are the latest Kering-owned luxury brands to confirm fur-free policies, Humane Society International/UK (HSI) said on Tuesday.

Alexander McQueen is no longer using fur, unlike in this collection from 2014 - DR

The news came as the UK government considers making Britain the first country in the world to ban the sale of fur now that the country has left the EU’s single market.

McQueen and Balenciaga join a long list of luxury labels cutting out fur, including Prada, Gucci, Armani, Versace, Michael Kors, Jimmy Choo, DKNY, Burberry and Chanel

The announcement regarding McQueen and Balenciaga was made in the parent company’s 2020 Universal Registration Document that said most of its labels now don’t use fur.

HSI, which leads the #FurFreeBritain campaign, has been working with Kering and its brands for more than a decade.

It said that almost 80% of people in the UK associate brands that use fur with the words ‘cruel’, ‘outdated’, ‘unethical’ or ‘out of touch’.

Kering has a long track record of cutting fur from its labels with Bottega Veneta having not used it for nearly 20 years and Gucci announcing it was going fur-free back in 2017.

However, the group’s Saint Laurent and Brioni brands have yet to announce fur-free policies.
