Amazon expands in Kansas, opens new fulfillment centers and delivery station

Amazon announced on Friday plans to open two new fulfillment centers in Kansas, as well as a new delivery station, which will open in the city of Wichita.

Both fulfillment centers are expected to open in 2021, which will lead to the creation of over 1,000 new full-time jobs, while the delivery station is expected to launch later this year.

In the two new one million square-foot fulfillment centers -- opening at 9700 Leavenworth Road in Kansas City, Kansas and at 7130 North Broadway Avenue in Park City, Kansas -- Amazon associates will work to pick, pack, and ship bulky or larger-sized customer items such as patio furniture, outdoor equipment, or rugs.

“We’re excited to continue our growth and investment across Kansas so we can better serve our customers throughout the state,” said Alicia Boler Davis, Amazon’s vice president of global customer fulfillment. 

“We are grateful for the strong support we’ve received from local and state leaders, and we look forward to ingraining ourselves in the communities in which we serve.”

Amazon has been rapidly building out its network of fulfillment centers in order to enable faster deliveries. The company launched its first two warehouses in 1997 and has since added locations across most of the U.S.

To date, Amazon has opened the most fulfillment centers in California and it appears to be planning many future locations across the southern US.

In Kansas, since 2010, Amazon has created more than 4,500 jobs and invested more than $2.9 billion across the state, in infrastructure and compensation. These investments have contributed an additional $2.3 billion in GDP to the Kansas economy and have helped create over 4,100 indirect jobs on top of Amazon’s direct hires – from jobs in construction and logistics to professional services.

Earlier this week, the e-commerce giant launched Prime Day as a kick-off to what will be an earlier holiday shopping season. The marketing event provides member-only discounts that incentivizes subscribers to do more shopping on Amazon.
