Amazon planning to launch own fashion brands?

Published
Oct 29, 2015

The online marketplace’s push into fashion may not be over. The retailer, which has been trying to get fashion labels to sell their goods at its platform and even launched a photo-shooting studio in London earlier this year, seems to be ready to fill the gap by creating some fashion labels itself.

According to some media reports, Jeff Yurcisin, vice president of clothing at Amazon Fashion and CEO of the retailer’s Shopbob unit, hinted at the plans on Tuesday at a US conference.

The retailer launched the womenswear brand Lark & Ro in May - Amazon

“For Amazon, we know our customers love brands, many of the brands in this room…and that’s where the lion’s share of our business comes from,” said the executive at the WWD Apparel and Retail CEO Summit. “When we see gaps, when certain brands have actually decided for their own reasons not to sell with us, our customer still wants a product like that.”

With over 40 million customers shopping Amazon Fashion, the e-tailer could be looking to get into private labels to meet the rising demand for apparel and accessories.

Amazon’s womenswear brand Lark & Ro label has already been introduced on the American site and more labels could follow. Media reports say the retail giant registered six trademarks in August (James & Erin, Franklin Tailored, North Eleven, Concrete New York, Society New York und Thirty Five Kent) with the Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market (OHIM).

Amazon currently sells products from brands such as Calvin Klein, Kate Spade, Puma, Steve Madden and Levi’s.
