Amazon tweaks website to curb consumer impulse buying
Apr 17, 2020
E-commerce giant Amazon is making changes to its website to curb impulse buying, as shoppers continue to overwhelm retailers with orders for staple items during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Originally reported by The Wall Street Journal, Amazon's changes to its site include the removal of the home page link to its daily deals section, as well as promotions for Mother's Day and Father's Day. In order to further decrease the possibility of panic buying, Amazon has also reduced the number of coupons available on its site, and is allegedly planning to delay Prime Day, Amazon's annual shopping event typically scheduled for mid-July, according to multiple reports.
The tweaks to the company's website mark the latest alteration made by Amazon since it lifted its suspension of incoming shipments of non-essential items from third-party sellers this week. The suspension, first put into place in mid-March, banned the shipment of all 'non-essential' items to Amazon warehouses, in order to keep up with overwhelming demand for staple goods as the pandemic worsened.
In late March, Amazon saw its Amazon Prime deliveries delayed up to one month, as the company was slammed with orders.
On Tuesday, Amazon's stock surged 5.3% to a new record high of $2,283 per share, thanks to consumer demand, marking an increase of over 20% this year.
