Asics rewarded EPA's Energy Star rating for sustainability practices

Asics America has received the EPA's Energy Star rating for the 3rd year in a row for its Mississippi-based distribution center and its sustainable operations.

The Byhalia Distribution Center in Byhalia, Mississippi was awarded the Energy Star rating for both running on 35 percent less energy than typical commercial buildings operating in a similar capacity, and for releasing 35 percent less carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

Jimmy Adames, Asics Sustainability & Social Responsibility Manager said, "We are taking the initiative to equip our facilities with the latest technology and information to maintain and exceed energy efficiencies... [We] are working hard to protect the environment, save energy and money."

In addition, Asics is executing its sustainability program in full force by converting to solar power and launching a shoe and apparel recycling program, which will be fully functional by the end of this summer. The plan includes shifting 20 percent of daily power use for its distribution center to solar panels, the equivalent of removing 200 million passenger cars off the road, or saving over 100,000 gallons of gas annually.

Asics has also partnered with I:Collect to launch its footwear and apparel recycling program. Consumers can drop off any brand of clothing and footwear at ten participating Asics retail locations. The old goods will be sorted, allowing the wearable items to be given to new consumers, while unwearable products will be recycled.

Customers will get a 15% coupon for their donation and all proceeds will go to Asics' philanthropic partner, Girls on the Run.
