Bravo greenlights a scripted TV show about Anna Wintour and Tina Brown

Published
May 15, 2017

The illustrious careers of Anna Wintour and Tina Brown will be coming to the small screen. Bravo will produce a scripted TV series based on both the friendship and rivalry of the two magazine editors, titled All That Glitters.

Frances Berwick, president of NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment’s Lifestyle Networks, announced the project at the network’s Upfront presentation in New York. The series come from producers Gale Anne Hurd and Judith Verno, of The Walking Dead and Masters of Sex fame, respectively. Universal Cable Productions and Sony Pictures Television will produce the series, which will be written and executive produced by Lawrence Konner and Mark Rosenthal.

Based on the Thomas Maier book Newhouse, the Bravo series will follow the rise of Wintour’s career at Vogue and Brown’s time at Vanity Fair and The New Yorker. According to Bravo, the show will examine the women’s ascension in a male-dominated field, as well as offer a glimpse of their behind-the-scenes rivalry at Condé Nast

Wintour began her career at Harper’s Bazaar in the 1970s. In 1988 she became the editor-in-chief of the American edition of Vogue, and was appointed artistic director of Condé Nast in 2013. She was the subject of the 2009 documentary The September Issue, and is widely believed to have inspired the titular character of Lauren Weisberger’s 2003 bestseller, The Devil Wears Prada. Earlier this month, Queen Elizabeth II named Wintour a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire.

Brown was editor-in-chief of Tatler by the age of 25, before moving to the U.S. to lead Vanity Fair in 1984, and later The New Yorker in 1992. She founded The Daily Beast in 2008 and left the publication to launch her own company, Tina Brown Media, in 2013. She became a CBE in 2000 and is also known for her biography of Diana, Princess of Wales.

All That Glitters is not the only recent series to examine powerful women. Cosmopolitan’s Joanna Coles served as the inspiration for the upcoming series The Bold Type, while FX recently examined the strained relationship of Bette Davis and Joan Crawford in its series Feud
