Britain's John Lewis sees -5.1% sales decline in week to March 28

British department store retailer John Lewis reported a -5.1% year-on-year decline in sales in the week to March 28. The figures were up against the same week last year, which was the run-up to Mother's Day and had "significantly more marketplace promotional activity," the company stated.

The weather was also cooler than in the same week last year, resulting in a softer start to spring and summer wardrobe shopping. However, sales were up 12% against the previous week.

Fashion sales fell 11.6% but childrenswear sales rose 9% and babywear was up by 33%. Online sales were up by 5.4% and click-and-collect by 14%.

"This week we're into the final run-up to Easter and we're well set across the business, particularly in store," said Paula Nickolds, Buying & Brand Director John Lewis.
