Burberry says it continues to pay staff, has donated 100k pieces of PPE

Burberry has updated us on the measures it has taken to protect its staff and customers during the coronavirus pandemic and stressed that it’s "committed to safeguarding jobs and supporting the relief efforts during this global health emergency”.

It said it will “continue to maintain base pay for all employees who are unable to fulfil their roles because of store or site closures”. And it won’t rely on government support for jobs in the UK where more than a third of its employees are based. Meanwhile, its senior leaders will take a voluntary 20% pay cut from April through June”.

The money raised from that 20% cut will be donated to the Burberry Foundation Covid-19 Community Fund. The fund was established earlier this month for its employees to support communities in need globally. This is in addition to donations the firm has made to vaccine research and charities alleviating food poverty.

It issued the update “given the rapidly evolving situation surrounding the pandemic” and said that in the past three months, it has put in place “measures to help prevent the spread of the virus and ensure employee safety and wellbeing, including temporarily closing retail stores and implementing strict social distancing protocols”.

The company added that its trench coat factory in Castleford is now manufacturing non-surgical gowns and supplying them to the UK National Health Service. And it’s sourcing surgical masks through its supply chain and supplying them to the NHS and charities such as Marie Curie. So far, it has donated more than 100,000 pieces of PPE.

The company didn’t issue any updates on trading but said it has rescheduled its preliminary results report for the year to March 28. It had been due on May 14 but will now happen on May 22.
