The Canadian Arts and Fashion Awards (CAFA) revealed on Wednesday that the sixth edition of its red-carpet award show gala will take place on Thursday, May 30th, 2019, with new award categories to be announced.

The annual award gala dedicated to recognizing Canadian-based designers and various members of Canada’s fashion industry across design, styling, modeling, photography, social impact, and digital media, will evolve to 22 award categories.

Last edition, it introduced The Outerwear Designer of the Year Award, which was awarded to a Canadian outerwear designer who made a lasting impact on the outerwear industry in Canada and abroad, for a total of 17 award categories.

Self-nominating award categories are also expected to make a return like The Swarovski Emerging Talent Award in Fashion Design and Accessory Design, The Simons Fashion Design Student Award, as well as The Joe Fresh Fashion Innovation Award.

“We could not be prouder of what we have accomplished as a community in the past years, or more excited for what lies ahead. We remain steadfast in our commitment to generate a stronger appreciation and market for Canadian fashion talent both in Canada and around the world.” said CAFA President Vicky Milner, in a news statement.

Among the winners last year, Montreal-based designer Marie Saint Pierre was recognized with the womenswear designer of the year award, while fellow Montreal brand Atelier New Regime was named menswear designer of the year. In the accessories category, Toronto-based handbag company, Ela, beat shoe brand Zvelle and Vancouver’s Herschel Supply Co to take home the accessory designer of the year award.

The official 2019 nominees are expected to be announced in January 2019.
