The Canadian Arts and Fashion Awards (CAFA) is moving towards a more inclusive format for the sixth edition of its red-carpet award show gala taking place on Thursday, May 30th, 2019.

The annual award gala dedicated to recognizing Canadian-based designers and various members of Canada’s fashion industry, announced last week that 16 of its 2019 award categories will now be self-nominating.

“To ensure that everyone has the opportunity to be considered, CAFA is offering Canadians across all fashion industry categories the opportunity to participate in the process,” said CAFA in a news statement.

Finalists will be selected by members of the 2019 CAFA Nominating Committee, while winners will then be chosen by members of the 2019 CAFA Jury.

New this year, CAFA has announced two new self-nominating categories: Makeup Artist of the Year and Hair Artist of the Year. The awards will recognize an innovative Canadian makeup or hair artist, who is a true creative force in the fashion and beauty industry.

Among the winners last year, Montreal-based designer Marie Saint Pierre was recognized with the womenswear designer of the year award, while fellow Montreal brand Atelier New Regime was named menswear designer of the year.

In the accessories category, Toronto-based handbag company, Ela, beat shoe brand Zvelle and Vancouver’s Herschel Supply Co to take home the accessory designer of the year award.

The official 2019 nominees are expected to be announced in January 2019. Submissions for the self-nominating categories are now open.
