The White House state dinner Thursday shone the spotlight, not only on Canada's royal family and head of state, but on a pair of Canadian-born designers who dressed First Lady Michelle Obama and Sophie Gregoire-Trudeau.

The First Lady chose a floral jacquard gown from longtime favorite designer Jason Wu, while Trudeau chose a slim fitting purple gown with peach detailing by Lucian Matis of Toronto.
Trudeau is said to be making a concerted effort to don outfits created by Canadian designers to showcase local talent.
Matis also designed the pink and red knee-length dress Trudeau wore earlier in the day.
Wu catapulted to fame after FLOTUS chose to don his dresses for husband's presidential inauguration ceremonies.
Matis can likewise expect to be catapulted into the upper spheres after Thursday's dinner.
Matis was born in Romania and immigrated to Canada where he studied fashion.
