Canali opens New Bond Street flagship store at prime site

Luxe label Canali has opened its new flagship store on the corner of New Bond Street and Brook Street. The opening coincides with its 85th anniversary with the company saying it “marks an exciting new chapter for the brand”.

Canali partnered with the award-winning creative studio Hangar Group to completely renovate the site that’s one of Bond Street’s prime and most visible spots.

The new store “encapsulates the brand’s identity in a more contemporary style” with the inspiration for the concept being taken “from the great Milanese residential architecture built in the 20th century. Echoing its elegance and sophistication, they have created a scenic space where rounded lines, sinuous profiles, shiny marble, and enveloping textures prevail”.

London is suffering from historically low footfall at present and also confronting the possibility of a no-deal Brexit at the end of the year coinciding with the end of tax-free sales to tourists. But company President and CEO Stefano Canali said the city is one of the brand’s most important markets.

He said the new location is “a compelling brand showcase for our clients [that] combines a historical and charming exterior with a modern infrastructure in line with the most sophisticated retail standards. The space will allow clients to plunge into the brand universe and discover our articulated product offering. Despite the current situation, we remain positive about the future and we are continuing to invest in initiatives and projects as this one that will sustain the brand development in the long term’’.

So what about the store itself? It’s on two floors and covers around 310 sq m, with “sculptural design elements”, such as the staircase and compact furnishings on the ground floor. The open plan space has fitted shelves and light structures “creating ease of movement around the store”. 

The entrance “encompasses the grandeur of its Mayfair location” with a large hall dominated by a nine-light chandelier that complements the checkout area, which stands out against a mosaic of velvet tiles. Veined marble flooring and wall coverings are used throughout, “defining the space with lighter tones that rise in contrast to the horizontal bands of the Canaletto walnut, reminding customers of the heritage of New Bond Street architecture”.

Importantly and in line with general trends in luxury retail, the store also has a VIP space “where the brand’s Su Misura offering can be held in a private setting where customers can enjoy the best of Canali’s sartorial expertise”.
