Commercial real estate show Mapic keen to embrace retail sector transformation

The 2022 edition of French commercial real estate show Mapic will be held from November 29 to December 1 in Cannes, and will focus on the retail sector’s transformation, after making its post-Covid come-back in 2021, when the pandemic’s impact was still felt. The trade show has been a regular fixture for 27 years, and will once again be staged at the Palais des Festivals.

“Nowadays, consumers want their behaviour and their purchases to be more meaningful, while businesses need to play a social role and have a real impact. Mapic will showcase and underline these new ways of approaching the retail trade, presenting new, innovative and flexible concepts that will enable industry players to meet current consumer expectations,” said Francesco Pupillo, director of the show organised by RX France.

The event will put centre stage a number of hybrid projects combining retail, residential and leisure solutions. Mapic will also introduce a new section called Retail Village, spotlighting businesses that used to give a wide berth to traditional shopping malls, like e-marketplaces, fast delivery specialists, DNVBs and emerging retail concepts, exemplified by exhibitors like vintage clothes retailer Kilo Shop, jewellery marketplace Seekd, emerging swimwear brand Poolday, French e-tailer Spartoo, and Japanese budget lifestyle retailer Daiso.

On the agenda, a number of conferences centred around the theme of a more sustainable development for the commercial real estate sector, with the goal of “steering the retail industry towards a more humane world.” Among them, two round-table debates will focus on responsible consumers and sustainable retail, and on the evolution of retail and urban logistics. Speakers will include Antoine Frey, CEO of the eponymous property developer, Eric Costa, head of real estate at Galeries Lafayette, and Alexandra Von Der Grün, vice-president retail expansion Europe at Adidas.

Mapic’s organisers claim to attract 1,500 between retailers and leisure and restaurant businesses, for a total of nearly 6,000 participants from 80 countries. Half of the area is devoted to retail exhibitors, while developers, city authorities, investors, contractors and service providers make up the other half.

In parallel with Mapic, Cannes will also host the second edition of the LeisureUp show, dedicated to the leisure sector, and The Happetite Forum, centred on the restaurant and catering world.
