Commes des Garçons to launch emojis

Published
Nov 24, 2016

Commes des Garçons is following the likes of Versace, Kim Kardashian, and Karl Lagerfeld with the release of its first emoji keyboard. The keyboard will play off the CdG’s famous PLAY logo. The smartphone add-on will include 24 cheeky, holiday-themed emojis, including a Santa emoticon, a martini-drinking emoticon, and a jet-setting emoticon. Emoji keyboards are downloaded via the App Store and integrate seamlessly into a smartphone keyboard.

The logo, which features a red heart with white eyes, was designed by Filip Pagowski in 2002. The logo is heavily seen on Commes des Garçons PLAY products, Commes des Garçons' lower-priced streetwear-centric line. The PLAY logo has since become one of the most recognized logos in high fashion.

The branded emoji trend really kicked off with Kim Kardashian’s “Kimoji” last year. For $1.99, customers can integrate various Kardashian-themed emojis into their smartphone keyboard, including a crying Kim face, an animated version of Kim’s rear, and several comic versions of some of the reality star’s most infamous Instagram posts. After many updates, the app now offers 500 different Kardashian emojis.

These aren't the first brands that have tapped into the emoji market. Back in 2014, Karl Lagerfeld announced his tongue-in-cheek line of emojis that featured comic versions of Lagerfeld’s cat Choupette decked out in the designer’s infamous black shades, high collar, and white ponytail.

Just in time for Valentine’s Day of this year, Versace launched its own line of branded emojis. Versace’s emoji venture incorporated the brand’s Medusa logo into the design of Apple’s iPhone emojis. The free emoji app also allowed users to create their own Versace-branded backgrounds and filters.

Earlier this month, Nike’s Jordan brand of sneakers released 24 emojis via the App store. Images of Michael Jordan, various Jordan sneakers, goats (in reference to the acronym “Greatest Of All Time”, and even DJ Khaled were all included in the release.

The Commes des Garçons collection will be available on November 23rd on the App Store, retailing for $1.
