Cone Denim takes innovative and sustainable jean manufacturing to the next level!
Dec 23, 2021
Cone Denim has been innovating for sustainable jean manufacturing and delivering unparalleled expertise and advanced capabilities since 1891. Their products service and inspire the global market through superior S Gene® technology, vintage re-creations of Cone Deeptone Denim, and Cone 3D R&D in their unique collections of performance, stretch, selvage, and natural indigo fabrics.
Over the years, Cone Denim has made significant investments to bolster their Mexico and China facilities’ responsible and sustainable manufacturing practices - groundbreaking initiatives strategically aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
In particular, Cone Denim participates in the UN Global Compact and CEO Water Mandate to promote clean water, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, minimize harmful chemicals, cut back on raw material consumption, and implement industry innovation.
As part of their 2025 commitments, Cone Denim and its parent company Elevate Textiles are committed to reducing water usage by 25% over their 2016 production baseline — a company endeavor that has already resulted in a global water recycling rate of 13%. They also installed a state-of-the-art Zero Liquid Discharge system for indigo dyeing in one of their Mexico operations. The customized ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis process recycles 90% of water back into manufacturing, resulting in no wastewater discharge and a savings of over 140 million gallons each year.
Cone Denim’s ambitious greenhouse gas emissions are set to reach a 46.2% reduction by 2030 in line with the Paris Climate Agreement. Even before setting public targets, Cone Denim had already made improvements to their energy impact by installing a cogeneration system to improve the quality and reliability of the power supply at their facilities in northern Mexico.
By joining forces with the revolutionary textile finisher Jeanologia, Cone Denim integrated Ozone Flash Finish technology into the brand’s sustainable fabric collection. This was an exciting move that enabled them to save an average of 83% more water over traditional finishing and significantly reduce energy and chemical usage.
And that’s not all. Cone Denim’s Sustainblue Collection is a responsible and environmentally friendly product line made from recycled and organic cotton, sustainably sourced indigo, and other low-impact components. The collection ensures their commitment to a better tomorrow is delivered to the end-user as a fashionable, high quality, and comfortable denim garment.
The U.S. Cotton Trust Protocol – setting a new standard in more sustainable cotton production
No one knows better than the textile industry that today’s consumers demand transparency across the supply chain. They want sustainably sourced and ethically produced clothing that is not only great to wear on the outside but feels good ethically on the inside.
The U.S. Cotton Trust Protocol was designed to deliver a better future for U.S. cotton, ensuring that it contributes to the protection and preservation of the planet, using the most sustainable and responsible production techniques. At the same time, it wanted to meet the needs of the fashion and textile industries, which are increasingly expected to show the sourcing data for their products.
Through the U.S. Cotton Trust Protocol, manufacturers like Cone Denim have the assurances they need to prove to their customers that they are an industry approved supply chain partner for brands and retailers sourcing products made with more sustainably grown cotton.
As a member of the U.S. Cotton Trust Protocol, Cone Denim can ensure that the cotton in their fabrics is more sustainably grown and with lower environmental and social risks.
