Cotton USA and Supima support emerging fashion design talent

Cotton USA and Supima, the association of US pima cotton growers, have recently presented the capsule collections created using US cotton by Jeffrey Taylor, winner of the ninth edition of the 'Supima Design Competition', and his fellow-finalists.

The winning collection

The competition was first held in 2008, and its objective is to provide visibility for emerging fashion design talent. It adopts the same approach introduced with the 'Wool Secretariat 1954' fashion show, which launched the careers of Yves Saint Laurent and Karl Lagerfeld.

Jeffrey Taylor, from the Savannah College of Art and Design, was hailed as the competition's winner in New York, and also received a prize to help kickstart his own design career. All of the Supima Design Competition former winners have subsequently managed to launch their own labels, showing their collections at the New York Fashion Week and collaborating with renowned international brands such as Michael Kors and Marchesa.

At the competition's runway show, each designer presented a capsule collection created using supima cotton material donated by partner brands such as AG Jeans, Brooks Brothers and Uniqlo.

Like Supima, Cotton USA too is a long-standing supporter of emerging talent, through its designer sponsorships at the London Fashion Week, which have already recognised the skills of Faustine Steinmetz, Lucas Nascimento, Preen, Richard Nicoll, Meadham Kirchhoff, PPQ, Louise Gray and palmer//harding.

This type of sponsorship is designed to make consumers aware of the quality and versatility of US cotton, and of its potential within the fashion industry.

Cotton USA is the global brand representing American cotton. The organisation operates offices in Washington DC, Memphis, London, Hong Kong, Seoul and Shanghai, and is also represented in several markets. Cotton USA plays a key role worldwide in promoting and circulating information on US cotton, and on the products that can be manufactured with it.

Supima is the not-for-profit organization that brings together the US growers of the world's best cotton, called 'superior pima', hence the organization's name. Over time Supima has become a fully fledged trademark, identifying a super-soft type of cotton, bright white in colour even when raw, and highly durable. It is grown only in a few estates in California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas.
